Literature:

* Opel: the Syd Barrett magazine by Ivor Trueman; From the British Library: System number 013429661, Dates of pub. Issues 1-12 (Sept. 1983-10 May 1986).

Audio:

*  Pink Floyd are in posession of several live 1967 tapes. Nick Mason boxes are full of rehearsals and tapes dating back even to 1965-1966.  Leonard Lodgers rehearsal tapes are still with him in boxes with decades of dust.  From 2012: "engineer Andy Jackson...has one gem that he discovered from “a huge box of assorted tapes” Mason possessed. “There’s quite a bit of very, very early stuff, before they had a deal, with Syd (Barrett) in the band when they were still trying to be an R&B band,” Jackson relates. “It’s not, like, early versions of songs that turned up on their albums or anything. It’s R&B classics, the same as everybody else was playing back them. There’s a lot of recordings that may be brilliant for a future project.”  https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/pink-floyd-mulling-more-reissues-after-expanded-wall-releases-506277/   ER: ~"Perhaps rehearsals at Broadhurst Gardens and/or some live tapes from 1964-1966. In Inside Out Nick mentioned that he still has a tapes of Hotrods, his very first band so he taped his bands rehearsals. CM also mentioned to me that Nick mentioned having a mid-1966 live tape as well. So 1965 Decca session is just a small sample of earliest band "RnB" era recordings.  Peter Gilmour has various live tapes of Jokers Wild playing in Cambridge so he might have Floyd as well when they were on the same bill. There's a tons of stuff like that in private hands from people of that era."

* 1966-04-13 Spontaneous Underground gig - from Mark Blake's peerless 'Pigs Might Fly' Page 56: "I remember seeing a guy called Ian Somerville, who was a friend of William Burroughs, sat in the booth at the Marquee with headphones on the whole time. Nobody knows what became of that tape."

* 1966-10-31 I Get Stoned and whatever else from that session

* 1966-12 Interstellar Overdrive - version for CBC

* 1967 (aka 1966-03) A ~5' Syd & Nick Mason Interview by a German journalist after a Spontaneous Underground gig at the Marquee was sold at auction awhile back.

* 1967-01 Full ~40' Irene Winsby rehearsal tape. She only gave Bernard an excerpt from it..

* 1967-01 solo demo tape Syd did for Joe Boyd - this apparently consisted of material PF didn't want.  Joe has said most of it was material he heard later on Madcap.

* 1967-04-03 Arnold Layne and Candy and a Currant Bun recorded at the BBC Playhouse Theatre for broadcast as the Live Session on 'Monday Monday' a BBC Radio Light Programme. (See The Peel Sessions page 319 and Random Precision page 263).

* 1967-08 Scream thy Last Scream acetate with original summer 1967 vocals.

* 1967-08-15 Reaction In G tape used for the German TV b'cast believed to be Sound Techniques outtake (Date is some what questionable as the entire band was on holiday during the first 2 weeks of Aug '67 save for 2 recording sessions at EMI.)

* 1967-09-04 No Title - 5' complete, pro quality version (aka 'Sunshine'), recorded at Sound Techniques. The tape box simply says “No Title”. This is a backing track to an untitled, unfinished Syd song. An interesting recording up to official release standards. Has a mellotron intro faintly reminiscent of Opel and then settles into a more R&B groove with a neat jangly guitar riff.

* 1967-09-25 BBC session in pro quality (Gnome / Scarecrow / Matilda Mother / Set The Controls / Reaction in G / Flaming).

* 1967-09-25 a rumored version of Apples & Oranges recorded at the same time as the rest of the 6 track BBC Session. Only the 6 tracks were originally broadcast on 1st October 67, but Apples & Oranges was also supposedly played when the session was repeated on 5th November (this time without Set The Controls or Reaction in G). According to Bernie Andrews (session producer) in Random Precision, p92, it was actually the single of Apples & Oranges that was played on Nov 5th, but The Peel Sessions lists it as a BBC Playhouse Theatre recording. The Random Precision account is far more belivable as Apples & Oranges wasn't even written yet!

* 1967-12 Interview with Jimi Hendrix and Rick Wright.

* 1967-12-20 BBC session in pro quality (Vegetable Man, Scream Thy Last Scream, Jugband Blues, Pow R Toc H)

* 1967-12-22 Christmas On Earth gig soundboard tape.  "The Floyd played around 2 - 3 o'clock Saturday morning. A painfully short set of around half an hour..."

* 1967-12-22 Christmas On Earth - "I've heard rumors of a Hendrix interview from that night. Supposedly you can hear "Interstellar Overdrive" vaguely in the background. If it exists, it's a rare tape. I've never been able to turn it up."

* 1968-? Late Night - unbooted take from Syd's first solo session.  Recorded at the first '68 solo session, this was scrapped and the backing track for the Madcap version was recorded. A rough mono mix of the first, unbooted version is at Abbey Rd.

* 1968-? Swan Lee with 1968 vocals (the vocals on Opel were done in '69)

* 1968-01-18 Takes 1 & 2 of "Rhythm Tracks"; Parker says there's a remote possibility that this is a recording of the 5-man Floyd, as Syd played his last show w/the band two days later.

* 1968-01-30 Syd's attempt at the Committee soundtrack.  Parker discovered the paperwork for the 1/30/68 session but the tapes aren't at Abbey Rd.  What is interesting is the session was originally booked as a Pink Floyd session but the paperwork says something like "Syd Barrett took the session". 1/26 was the gig where Syd wasn't picked up so this is only a few days after that.

* 1968-02? Corporal Clegg alt mix for Belgian video (unlikely Syd is on this) - video does circulate

* 1969-12-17 Kevin Ayers - Religious Experience takes w/Syd on guitar, Abbey Road studios.  From The Holy Church of Iggy the Inuit: "According to the tape box two different lead guitar tracks were added to take 10 of the song. Random Precision author David Parker notes that the third track of the tape 'is the guitar playing one hears on the single [issued under the title Singing A Song In The Morning]... but on track 8 of the multi-track another completely different sounding lead guitar is playing away'. That one is Syd's guitar... (the same track has a mellotron as well, played by Ayers).  The next day the Religious Experience tapes were further worked on by Peter Jenner for stereo mixing. For an unknown reason the takes were renumbered from take 10 to take 100, and four stereo mixes do exist at the EMI library that include Barrett's guitar in one way or another:

take 100 – 3:07 (unreleased)

take 101 – 3:07 (unreleased)

take 102 – 3:05 (unreleased) and

take 103 – 2:47 (released on the remastered Joy Of A Toy CD).

* 1971-? Love You / Interview - Mick Rock interview for Rolling Stone with Syd playing Love You on his 12 string.

* 1972-01 photo or recording w/Eddie 'Guitar' Burns?, Kings College Cellar, Cambridge

* 1972 multiple Nagra recordings of Stars live shows made by Victor Kraft. Presumed lost.

* 1972-02-26 cassette of Stars opening for Nektar, Cambridge Corn Exchange.  Presumed lost.

* 1972-fall Steve Took session masters

* 15 mins of full band rehearsals at the end of a Sound Techniques 4 track

* Abbey Rd demos of Wolfpack, Waving My Arms and Living Alone

* Arnold Layne & Candy and a Currant Bun - true stereo mixes from the multitracks (these will likely be lacking vocals)

* Bike - an acetate exists that has alternate lyrics from a perfect quality tape source that is stored at EMI with the rest of the 1967 PF tapes. I don't know how I missed this but the alt mix (RM1) was mixed a) after the original vocals were recorded and b) well before the final vocals replaced the original vocals and c) is listed in the inventory of reels in the back of Random Precision. I doubt they even listened to that reel.

* Chapter 24 E63424 - alternate version - a finished unused backtrack that had all sorts of overdubs added

* Early Morning Henry – one take of this title was recorded during the Apples and Oranges. This isn't in EMI's vault, only the paperwork which says "taken on a plastic spool by Norman Smith".  Just possibly Mason has a copy, although the title didn't ring a bell with him when asked.

* Games For May sound effects tapes (some were used for "The Man/The Journey")

* Intermental - 10' Jam from Beechwoods session - could be a jam on Beechwoods or something else. - apparently it's Reaction in G!

* Interstellar Overdrive - unedited version of French EQ runs 10:20, a minute longer than the LP version

* It Would Be So Nice - the "Evening Standard" version (unlikely Syd is on this)

* Jugband Blues alternate takes

* Lanky (unlikely Syd is on this as it's just a recording of bongos)

* Living Alone - Gilmour has this from EMI

* Lucifer Sam - early mix that is lacking vocals and some instrumental overdubs.  (on same tape as Bike acetate)

* Lucifer Sam early mix (RM1) has alternate/early vocals and guitars in addition to lacking lots of overdubs

* Nick's Boogie - Saucerful-era version.  Unlikely Syd is on this as this is supposedly just the section of Saucerful where Mason's drums come in.

* Paintbox - There are a couple of reels of Paintbox takes including one with unused Syd guitar overdubs that were to be used backwards.

* Remember a Day - extra takes exist on a Vegetable Man reel

* Scream Thy Last Scream E65464 - unreleased Pink Floyd song written by Syd Barrett

* Set The Controls - Syd-centric remix (it appears that the bass riff is Syd's gtr with the treble turned all the way down)

* She Was A Millionaire

* Singing A Song In The Morning - Syd-centric mix

* The BBC Monday, Monday session

* Tomorrow's World instrumental - does more audio and/or film exist than on the video we have?

* Vegetable Man E68413 - unreleased Pink Floyd song written by Syd Barrett - There are a couple of reels of Veg Man takes. One reel is all Veg Man stuff and the other is Veg Man and Remember a Day takes. Crazy Diamond box compiler Phil Smee said he found 3 takes of Veg Man. The one we all know, a faster complete version, and a version with "crazy sound effects whizzing all over the place...".

* Any other bits/outtakes/alternate versions of Syd-era Floyd or solo Syd!

* Note: Random Precision pages 236-239 lists every reel # that contains 1967 Pink Floyd material that is in the vault at EMI.

* Q: is there a "Millionaire" acetate?  or one of "Percy The Ratcatcher?"  A demo of "Snowing" or "Flapdoodle Dealing?"

Film:

* 1960s? - "Get all that Ant?' documentary by Anthony Stern. ~80'? The documentary feature includes film, stills and archive footage taken during the 1960s and filmed in Cambridge, London and San Francisco.  Most of the film material has never been seen before and contains live performances and stills from The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Pink Floyd and Donovan, together with footage of Barrett's friends and colleagues, including Iggy Rose, the girl on the sleeve of his album The Madcap Laughs, and former girlfriends Libby Gausden and Jenny Spires.

* 1966/67 - Yoko Ono recordings? "I have heard that Yoko Ono should have a complete show on film from 66/67"

* 1966-04-08 - Julian Palacios's book says Syd was present (right up against the stage during Lou Christie's act) at this Ready Steady Go show. It appears the footage of Lou Christie has been lost but perhaps other footage from that show exists & might show Syd?  Sadly most RSG footage was destroyed.

* 1967 Peter Whitehead any more footage from Sound Techniques and/or UFO?  Supposedly all released on Pink Floyd Early Years boxset and Anthony Stern film The Memory Marbles of Anthony Stern

* 1967, Pink Floyd vs IT, 16 mm silent,  Have you got a copy of a missing early music video of "the Floyd"? In 1967 film-maker and writer Stacy Marking.. shot some 16mm film of the band titled Pink Floyd vs IT. The only copy of the silent footage, which Marking admits was much influenced by the work of Dick Lester on the Beatles' films Hard Day's Night and Help!, was thought to have gone up in flames in a fire in her studio in 1973. But the Markings have just heard that the film was described in a 1968 copy of the underground paper International Times after it played at a film festival in Manilla.  "It really involved a lot of them running about in single file, sometimes in silhouette, and the Floyd as good guys taking on some unseen monster/enemy, being chased or fighting back," remembers Marking. "This was one of the very first films to be tied to a record release. I suppose we thought it would be projected at clubs. The four wore black or at least very dark clothes, and we painted a whole street white. Most of it was filmed in an alley behind Tottenham Court Road where there was a long wall on one side, and I think a derelict site on the other. I wanted it painted white to exaggerate the contrast, so we all – including the Floyd members I think, anyway one or two of them, plus their agent Peter Jenner, Spike Hawkins and me - came along the day before with huge cans of white paint and we whitewashed the whole alley, pavement as well. When challenged by passersby we said it was part of the Keep Britain Clean campaign. Of course, with the subsequent tragedy of Syd Barrett, the film would have become a wonderful record of him in full flower and it terribly grieves me that that is gone." Get in touch if you have seen it.   From: A Very Irregular Head pg 187: "To accompany 'Scream Thy Last Scream', poet Spike Hawkins devised an equally strange promotional film. 'I saw this overcoat hanging up and I thought, "That's a sinister thing.  It's dark. I can't see the arms." This wondeful poet called Ted Milton lent me the overcoat, and it was rigged up - do you know those isolated little alleyways at the back of Tottenham Court Road and New Oxford Street? We had the overcoat move and filmed it and it still looked sinister in these dark Victorian alleys where anything could happen.  Then we had an an office set up with two telephones, typewriter, girl sitting there doing her nails and suddenly she sees this overcoat, face on.  Then the Floyd roared in and rescued this girl.   Unfortunately we didn't have sound but the Floyd were going to use it for a single they were going to bring out called 'Scream scream scream" (sic). I thought it was bloody great. The film as it was made was paced by the song, but even as black-and-white silent film it was spectacular.'

* 1967-02 Pete Townsend recordings? "supposedly has the entire UFO gig film used for the 1967-02 Granada TV special" - just a mistaken rumor confusing the UFO footage Pete has that was used in Die jungen Nachtwandler.

* 1967-02-24 Die jungen Nachtwandler outtakes - just a mistaken rumor confusing the UFO footage Pete has that was used in Die jungen Nachtwandler.

* 1967-03 EMI contract signing was filmed in color

* 1967-03-06 The Rave - Granada TV - Arnold Layne - Supposedly not aired and destroyed.

* 1967-04-29 Nederland 1 TV Studios, Zaandam, The Netherlands, Fan Club TV appearance, broadcast 05-05; "Lots of people have looked into this one and it looks like nothing exists from the show."

* 1967-04-29 14 Hour Technicolor Dream footage - BBC2 or Peter Whitehead?

* 1967-06-02? UFO Film from the same Dutch guy (Mark Boyle) that released the color Soft Machine youtube clip; "That guy that had the b&w clip of the Soft Machine at UFO has b&w footage of a complete PF show at UFO. I'm told PF management was interested in it but the quality wasn't that great."  Supposedly a 20' & 50' reel exists.

* 1967-07-06, 13 & 20 - Top Of The Pops - See Emily Play - We have one but there were three appearances, none of them exist in BBC archives - BBC2

* 1967-07-09 London, Chalk Farm Roundhouse - filmed for BBC2.

* 1967-07-17 or 18 - Come Here Often - London Rediffusion (footage filmed at Tiles Club, Oxford Street 16th June 1967, it was a documentary about the DJ, unknown if any PF was shown.)

* 1967-07-19 Floral Hall, Norfolk (newspaper article claimed it was filmed for BBC, unknown what, if anything, was done with it or even if it was filmed at all) - Apparently no footage exists.

* 1967-07-29 Love-In Festival, Alexandra Palace; "The photo of the guy onstage with the big camera pointed at Syd is actually from the Love-In Festival at Alexandra Palace not the 14 Hour Technicolor Dream*. More interesting as by all accounts Syd was in very poor shape that night and that weekend is cited by Rick as the point of no return for Syd. The Love-In Fest was sort of the UK version of Altamont but not as severe."  * "Don't laugh but you can tell by Syd's hair. We have a photo from Fan Club that was taken the same day as the 14 Hour Dream show and he didn't have that curly perm then. Games For May and Look of the Week were a few weeks after 14 Hour Dream and he didn't have the curly perm there either which proves he didn't have the perm that night. The only other gig at Alexandra Palace was the Love-In festival so we can deduce that the photo would have to be from the Love-In fest.  Parts of The Wall were inspired by that gig and it largely was the reason why the band cancelled 2 weeks of gigs due to Syd's "nervous exhaustion". No idea who filmed it or for what purpose."

* 1967-08-01? Beat Club, Bremen.  Reaction In G excerpt was rebroadcast on Beat Club Episode #42 News 1969-04-26 (w/o voiceover) and then 1993-07-02 & 1995-06-05 (w/voiceover) - "There was no show on 1967-08-01, Episode #22 is from 7/22 & #23 from 8/26.  Uschi Nerke voiceover version was broadcast on Beat Club Episode #45 News 1969-08-02."

* 1967-09-18 Belgian "TV Spectacular" (mentioned in Melody Maker, no evidence it ever happened)

* 1967-Nov-Dec - Come Here Often - Pink Floyd mime (perhaps Apples & Oranges?) while kids dance about.  One of the kids has been interviewed and does remember seeing the show broadcast on TV.

* 1967-11-? Perry Como Show - Andrew King recollects that they mimed Matilda Mother; "It's very likely Andrew King was mis-remembering the Pat Boone show as the Perry Como show ended its run in the early '60's."

* 1967-11-06 Pat Boone In Hollywood Show, CBS - See Emily Play & Interview, broadcast 12-04; "Lots of people have looked into this one and it looks like nothing exists from the show.  FWIW Pat clearly remembers Pink Floyd on his show but has no recollection of any difficulties with any band members."

* 1967-11-08 Sam Riddle/Boss City Show in Los Angeles, broadcast 11-11

* 1967-11-25 Opera House, Blackpool - footage from Jimi's set at this gig exists, was any film shot of PF?

* 1967-11? Syd on the tour bus film shot by Jimi Hendrix

* 1967-12-22 Pete Townsend recordings? "supposedly has the 1967-12-22 Christmas On Earth show (not clear if that's audio or film)" - just a mistaken rumor confusing the UFO footage Pete has that was used in Die jungen Nachtwandler.

* 1967-12-22 Keith West said he watched film of Tomorrow's set at Joe Boyd's house after the show. Chas Chander said he watched it after the festival too. Apparently the guy that produced the filming, one Tommy Weber, stored it in the basement of a friends house where it was repossessed when the guy defaulted on the mortgage.

* 1968-01 - 5 Man Pink Floyd - silent backstage footage shot by Mason including Syd tap-dancing

* 1969? - "There is more silent home movie footage of Syd from the same lot as that shown in the Knebworth film and in much better quality."

* 1969? - In Meic Steven's autobiography he talks about a BBC(?) documentary-type thing being filmed at his house in southwest Wales in about 1969, and mentions that Syd Barrett was visiting at the time and appeared in the film.  He seems to think the film was destroyed or binned after being edited down to a 5-minute segment…

Errata:

* Iggy The Eskimo Girl (Anthony Stern) - have 3:23 version, is there more?
